Why Less is More can be Vital to your Blog or Online Business

It’s everywhere we look and listen. It’s in effective advertising, captivating blog posts, and creative areas such as web design and visual branding. It’s an inevitable byproduct of the information age and ironically also of our own expanding needs and wants. Most importantly though, it has undergone a gradual development from being a ‘matter of taste‘ to probably one of the most underrated success factors for online business.

Whether you’re into writing posts for your blog, doing copywriting for affiliate pages, or thinking of redesigning your wordpress theme. In our digital world of nearly endless choice, at times, you’re going to have to make it short, powerful and sweet in order to be successful.

To illustrate the importance of ‘less is more‘ as a success driver, you’ll find a short list of tips below. I’ve selected the ones I believe to be most popular, but of course there are many more. So anyone who feels they have something to add, they are most welcome to do so …

‘Less is more’ can be directly related to :

  • Blog traffic increase
Shorter blog posts are easier and faster to read (and write!). It’s easier for the reader to hold their attention, and short blog posts lead to more entry points for visitors coming from search engines (through seo) . These short articles also allow for a far greater chance of success in social media sites, since the more articles are submitted, the more traffic you can potentially attract. Shorter posts are also perfect as an incentive for more in depth posts. I usually write an in depth post and link to it from the shorter more easy to read articles.
  • More effective Advertising
Entertaining and persuasive advertising is usually easy to understand and remember. Nowadays advertising is everywhere and while many people hate ads. they just keep on coming. It’s important to translate a concept into a short and memorable experience that’s likable as well. It’s a fact that out of a group of advertisements that basically have the same production quality, the concept that’s broken down to the simplest form will usually come out as most effective.
  • Better blog theme and web design
Unlike what Scobleizer once said, having a balanced out blog theme design, and maintaining the visual aspects of it while publishing posts (no ugly images and so on..) is an important part of your online branding. Without branding you basically have no identity.Swimming in a sea of blogs and affiliate sites, it’s only logic that design elements are given utmost care during development, and that we try to make them as appealing, easy to use and effective as possible within the larger frame of the concept.
  • Boredom inhibition
Nobody likes to read a boring article, watch a boring movie or listen to a sleep inducing speech. Take into account that the longer a blog post is the more difficult it becomes to hold a reader’s attention. This is why shorter blog posts are usually more successful. If there’s anything that should be learned from this post then it is probably this: Always, and I mean always avoid being boring !
  • Authority building
Unless the aim is to confuse, too much talking is never a good idea in business. Too many words can indicate insecurity or an attempt to divert attention away from something. Learning how to regulate how many words are used in a text (post, review, sales page) can be an incredible authority builder.

These are only 5 tips that are directly related to ‘less is more’. Actually implementing the concept and giving more value by bringing less isn’t as easy as it sounds. Writing a blog post while keeping it short and at the same time taking into account seo, readability and style can be a challenge. Brainstorming and breaking down an advertising or branding concept into something simple, powerful and charismatic can be an outright terrible job.

The most important thing to keep in mind though is that it may be worth the trouble, because as many professionals see it, nowadays the ‘less is more’ concept has evolved into an unofficial discipline that some are actively using in order to succeed on the web.

    Hi Lex,

A very interesting post, and I do get the point to keep the post short. I like the idea of writing a short post then linking to a longer post, since there are times when you just need that length.

As for your suggestion not to be boring… I am not how you would apply that, since those who bore, probably don’t know, and Oh My God, I hope I haven’t done that.

I guess I will just have to use “short” and hope that gets rid of any boring bits.

    Hey Lex,

Great post. I think that long posts have their place, as long as they are formatted well, feature images to break up the text, and are deep in expertise. These are the types of posts that attract new subscribers, while shorter posts are great at bringing in traffic.

So, depending on what your goal is, you should write that type of post.

Great Article. I have the habit of writing to long. I get in the mode and before I know I know it I have written a novel. I won’t give you any more long boring details lol. But really enjoyed the read. Great article and fun to read, oh sorry there I go again. Thumbs up. I will leave it at that

    Megan,

Thanks, you know, I’ve got a habit of writing too long myself. The thing is that when I revise a post, I sometimes am able to take out a few sentences from a paragraph…

As a result, the whole thing becomes more short, more clear and is easier to understand … the difference between a rough and polished I guess ;)

Revising IMO is a very valuable thing, if you take the time to do it right …

    @Pinny,

You’re very right … there is indeed a place for long posts as well … What I like to do myself is work around a very long article such as the keyword attack formula (which you can find in the sidebar) by adding a bunch of shorter posts that target other but related keywords then the ones in the long article … This way you can cover an even wider spectrum of potential readers …

And let’s not forget that those keywords might be long tail as well, making the shorter posts ideal to attract traffic and flow them to the longer post ..

I’m a big fan of brevity and of authors making one point very well. Thanks for the tips. You’ve done that here.

You have done a great job of leading by example. I read your post in its entirety…primarily because it didn’t bore me and was breif. My priest always referred to the 5 B’s, “Be Brief Boy, Be Brief.” Nice job and great info.
