Strategic SEO - building an optimal keyword attack formula for bloggers (4/4)

After reading part 3 you should know how your blog is structured according to your selection of keywords. Keep in mind that you’ve selected the combination of keywords based on the goals that you described in your online business plan. Now it’s time to start focusing on those goals. Depending on your aim, you’re going to have to write content for your blog.
Content is what attracts visitors. More important then just having content on your blog however, is having the correct content. This kind of content that is designed to facilitate your goals.

Basically you need to write articles with a plan in mind. I will give you an example of this further on in this post. You may notice that this article keeps discussing the strategic level of search engine optimization. It doesn’t really go into how to use the wordtracker’s features in order to do basic keyword research. This is because I don’t intend to write a wordtracker user guide. And on the other hand, signing up for a free wordtracker trial account means that they’ll give you a free keyword basics email course :)

This final part of the article is going to show you how to turn a creative idea for reaching your blog’s goal into content. In this case it will be an example of channeling traffic between articles on your blog in order to achieve a certain thing (maybe selling affiliate products, or something else). Understanding how serious online business entrepreneurs approach their job can be valuable for you when the times comes that you’re going to start your own web business project.

First, let’s get started with some explaining about smart content writing, followed up by our example !

In my opinion, you are writing content smartly only when your are putting yourself into the shoes of your potential visitor (or customer). It’s really logic, but you’d be amazed how many people forget this. Here’s something to keep in mind, I strongly believe that writing content smartly is where the difference between the average and the successful web entrepreneur lies.

Smartly written content is content that is designed in order to facilitate the ideas you have and the goals that you would like to achieve. An example was already given in the previous parts of this article, when it was said that you can flow your blog readers from article to article on you blog.

There are many examples of channeling traffic through your blog.

Note : Long tail phrases and many easier to rank for keywords are included naturally into your articles as you write. This happens by itself if you write about a subject that you are knowledgeable about. You can later check which keywords you are ranking for in the search engines by using a tool called seodigger. You can use this information to check if the results that you are getting are the same as the results that you are getting. Then you can decide to do some tweaking here and there in the way you write your content. I’m in the process of writing a post which will describe many free tools and how you can benefit from them. So keep an eye our for that one if you’re interested.

Step #5 - writing smart content in order to facilitate your goals
Keep in mind that for our example blog, we set out to eventually rank for keyword phrases covering the whole spectrum of competitiveness while attracting traffic fast through easier to attack phrases. We chose these criteria because through these particular types of traffic, we are able to execute our plans and ideas. We can for instance sell products on pages that are optimized for more specific keywords. On the pages that are optimized for harder to rank for keywords, we could sell direct advertising or get good adsense click commissions (if the commissions are attractive).

For example :
Let’s say that you are selling internet marketing products on pages that are optimized for the focussed keywords.
In order to attract the correct visitors you’ve written some stunning reviews for some great internet marketing books and products. The articles, in this case the reviews can bring in interested visitors, which in turn are potential customers.

However, having written a well optimized and great review for a product may not be enough in order to convert your visitor into a buying customer. Be sure that unless you have a monopoly in your market (which I doubt) your competitors have also put reviews of the same products on their blogs. Now suddenly you need to be creative and find a way to make the visitor want to buy from you instead of from your competitor.

Think about what would happen if you’d tell the potential customer that they have a chance of winning a certain prize if they buy the product from you instead of somebody else ? Even better, what about a small free give away right on top of the chance to win the prize if they buy a product ? The free give away could for instance be a short internet marketing ebook that you wrote specially for this purpose. You could for instance put a link in the review that the visitor is reading and encourage them them to find out what the free give away is by visiting that link ;)

Since this is a very interesting situation there is a good chance they will click the link, in order to at least check what the free giveaway is. You now have the opportunity to, aside from dealing with the free give away, maybe promote different articles which are on your blog. Maybe the page even has affiliate links to related products on it. And why stop there ? Since your free give away is an internet marketing ebook, maybe you’ve decided to make references in this ebook to certain articles on your blog that are optimized for hard to rank for keywords. It’s not your fault that the content on those particular pages triggers adsense ads with a high commission. Or is it ?

If you look at the complete channel that a visitor to your blog has traveled, then you’ll notice that it started with an entry point based on easier to rank for keyword phrases which are attracting the visitor to the product review. Your smart writing of content however could have channeled the reader to articles that are optimized for competitive keywords. What you do on those pages is your business.

This is just an example of what you can do if you are creative and take the time to think of ideas. Let me add that if you copy these examples exactly from this article, you still can’t be sure that they’ll work and make you millions ! The reason is because it really depends many things if you are successful (your writing skills, your competitor’s skills, your branding strategy, your ideas, you budget for pay per click ;) )

Be creative and you’ll think of something. Test it out and if it doesn’t work, then don’t give up immediately, but think of something else and try that.

Important - making sure that the information you are working with is accurate
The truth about web business, or making money online is that it’s a lot more work then most people think it is. This post has taken you through a little adventure which is only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to how to set up a profitable blog. If you’re serious about your work then you need to make sure that all the hours you spend researching and thinking of creative ideas in order to generate revenue are not partially wasted because you are basing your conclusions on incorrect keyword research information.

This is why I recommend wordtracker on newmediatype. Simply because you need to make sure that get the most accurate information to work with and because of the features that it offers. If you’re serious about getting your online market research done correctly I’d first sign up for a free trial at wordtracker. This will give you the opportunity to explore wordtracker first hand, plus that they’ll give you a free keyword basics email course. Now what’s the harm in that ?

Final words

I can imagine that the information in the first parts of this article can be ‘abstract’ at times to unexperienced readers. The thing to remember is that this example is a theoretical situation. In reality things aren’t exactly like this. You might have different goals for your project then we used in the example.

In regard of the optimal keyword attack formula, it really depends on the mission statement that you write, how your combination of keywords is going to look. However, having understood this article means that you are able to apply the ‘basics’ of strategic thinking to search engine optimization. I believe that if you do this you are maximizing the chance for success, because web entrepreneurship can be frustrating when things aren’t working out as expected.

I really hope that you’ve enjoyed this post and that it taught you something new. All I can say now is, experiment with what you’ve learned and you’ll find what suits your needs best ;) .
